Drafted by Essex County Council and the Safer Essex Roads Partnership, the Essex Safer Speeds Strategy \u2018sets out a flexible and evidence-based approach to how we plan to introduce safer speeds in Essex\u2019.<\/p>

Essex County Council said: \u201cWe aim to help transform our county’s towns and villages from places which can sometimes feel dangerous and intimidating into safer, greener and healthier local communities.<\/p>

\u201cThe new strategy will help establish a coordinated and effective approach to managing speeds which recognises the changing ways people travel.<\/p>

\u201cSpeed is the biggest factor in fatal road traffic collisions in Essex. In 2025, 60 people lost their lives on the county\u2019s roads, while many more suffered life-changing injuries. Nearly half of the deaths were related to excess speed.<\/p>

\u201cResidents also often tell us they feel unsafe walking, cycling or moving around their neighbourhoods because of vehicle speeds.<\/p>

\u201cTo achieve our shared Vision Zero aspiration that no one should be killed or seriously injured on Essex roads by 2040, we need to take steps to manage speeds, improve road design and support safer travel choices.\u201d<\/p>

Stock Parish Council continues to pursue Essex Highways regarding\u00a0a number of Local Highways Panel (LHP) applications made in November 2023 focused on reducing speed and making roads around the village safer for all users.<\/p>

These LHP applications were for the installation of average speed cameras in Stock Road\/B1007, the reduction of speed limits on the High Street\/B1007, Downham Road and other roads in the village, improvements to the pedestrian crossing between The Square and Budgens and the moving of the Billericay-bound bus stop on Stock Hill, all of which were initially rejected by Essex Highways.<\/p>

The Parish Council has spoken to Sir John Whittingdale MP, who has requested an urgent meeting with Essex County Council cabinet member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport Mark Platt.<\/p>
