Stock came together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day on the Common with the lighting of the village beacon on Thursday 6 June.
Eight decades ago, Operation Overlord saw over 4,000 ships and landing craft deliver more than 125,000 Allied troops on five beaches in Normandy in northern France in an action that would bring about the liberation of France, and the rest of Western Europe, from Nazi Germany and the Axis powers, and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front and the end the Second World War in September 1945.
To commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for the freedom we enjoy today, beacons were lit around the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, representing the ‘light of peace’ that emerged from the darkness of war.
Stock Cricket Club opened to serve drinks and snacks, while villagers enjoyed fish and chips from the visiting van, as National Fish and Chip Day moved from its traditional Friday slot to coincide with the D-Day celebrations.
